About eight percent (8%) of aortic dissection patients also have a Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV).
At the time of dissection, patients with a bicuspid valve were younger (about 47 years) compared to average age for dissection for all aortic dissection patients (63 years), with the entry tear more often located in the root compared with those with a tricuspid valve.
About five percent (5%) of aortic dissection patients has the connective tissue disorder Marfan Syndrome.
At the time of dissection, patients with Marfan Syndrome also were younger (median age about 37 years). Also in this group most of the dissections is located close to the aortic root.
Aortic dissection is not something that only happens older male persons. It can happen also to young women.
